WALDORF, Md. — The familiar Shoppers Food in Waldorf, located at 1170 West Smallwood Drive, will close this fall as part of the parent company’s broader effort to shrink its retail footprint. United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) has confirmed the store will cease operations by mid-October, one of four Maryland locations scheduled for closure.
In a statement to The BayNet, a Shoppers spokesperson acknowledged the impact of the closures:
“We know the impact our stores have for the people who work in, shop in, and live in our communities. Like any other retailer, we’re constantly working to optimize our footprint, which includes investing in stores as well as closing stores where necessary so we can operate as effectively and efficiently as possible.
After carefully evaluating all options, we have made the decision to close the following stores on or before Oct. 11, 2025:
• Essex — 2286 Middlesex, 1200 Eastern Blvd.
• New Carrollton — 7790 Riverdale Rd.
• Waldorf — 1170 W. Smallwood Dr.
• Westminster — 551 Jermor Ln.
We are deeply grateful to our team members for their contributions and will support them through this transition. Shoppers Food remains committed to serving our communities and our customers and looks forward to serving them from other nearby store locations or online via various grocery delivery services.”
The Waldorf store has been no stranger to change. In December 2019, UNFI sold the location to McKay’s Food and Pharmacy, though the store continued to operate under the Shoppers name and branding. It closed in 2021 under McKay’s ownership before Shoppers later returned to the site. With this fall’s shutdown, the property again joins the long list of retail spaces in Southern Maryland that have seen repeated openings, closings and rebrandings.
