If you search through TikTok, you’ll probably come across a few videos of influencers pushing magnesium supplements. While some of these trends cause concern for experts, nutritionists are on board and happy to see magnesium is getting some recognition.

In 2018, The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association estimated up to half of Americans are deficient in magnesium. The mineral element helps regulate stress hormones, sleep quality, hydration, muscle growth, and recovery. It also creates serotonin, a natural mood stabilizer.

Now, TikTok users claim mixing magnesium powder with tart cherry juice and prebiotic soda will give you the best sleep of your life. They call it the “sleepy girl mocktail”. It’s been around since last year, but TikToker Gracie Norton posted it recently and it has more than 1.5 million views.

Hundreds of people have commented after trying the beverage agreeing with the fact that it does help them sleep.

Researchers support what’s in the mocktail saying tart cherry juice has melatonin in it, the hormone that makes you drowsy at bedtime, and magnesium promotes relaxation and stress reduction. The only downside to the drink is the prebiotic soda that could trigger digestive issues.

Meantime, experts offer up other ideas to help get restful sleep. They include drinking warm milk, herbal teas, eating almonds, walnuts, bananas, and kiwis.
