The Chopticon Braves (6-3) moved a step closer to a home playoff game in the first round or the 3-A South playoffs with a 31-12 win over Patuxent(4-5). The Braves were vaulted into second place in 3-A South as both Potomac and Friendly both lost over the weekend.
If Chopticon wins this Friday night at home against Leonardtown (2-7), they will secure the second seed. The Raiders lost to McDonough 43-0 and have been outscored over the last five weeks by a combined 213-24 in those five losses. Chopticon jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, after TD catches from Cody Douglas to Sterling Miles (23 yds) and Josh Reeves (42 yds). New Patuxent QB Travez Lee put Patuxent on the board with a one yard TD run. Douglas found his favorite, and 3-A leading, receiver, Josh Gray on a 38 yard TD pass and Douglas added a 2 yard QB keeper for a score as well. Douglas finished the day 15 of 24 for 232 yards and 3 TD passes. The Chopticon defense was led by Michael Messick who was named the Papa John’s Player Of The Game.
Elsewhere in the 3-A South playoff battle, First place Westlake (8-1) locked down their top seed with a 47-7 thrashing of the Parkside Rams from Salisbury. The Wolverines jumped out to a 25-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. WR Steven Koussodou started the scoring with a 50 yard TD from QB Chris Istvan. Michael Westray led Westlake in rushing with 5 carries for 51 yards and two TD’s (22 and 5 yds). Tony Hale added a 53 yard TD run in the second half and Walter White capped the scoring with a 12 yard TD run late in the game.
Huntingtown (6-3) jumped into the fourth spot in 3-A South with their 21-6 victory over Lackey (3-6). Andrew Bose led all rushers in SMAC last week with 216 yards rushing on 21 carries and two TD runs. Westlake will make the playoffs with a victory over Great Mills (5-4) at home. If they stay in fourth place, the first round battle will be an interesting one with the last two representatives to make the state championship game (2009 Huntingtown lost in championship game, 2008 Westlake won State Championship) facing each other at Westlake on November 12, 2010.
