ST. MARY’S COUNTY, Md. – This February, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office proudly honors and celebrates the rich tapestry of African American history and culture during Black History Month. We recognize the invaluable contributions of African Americans throughout history and those who have played pivotal roles in shaping the law enforcement community, including SMCSO Corporal Andrew Holton.

With a career spanning 37 years, Corporal Holton has been a cornerstone of our department since he was hired by Sheriff Joseph Somerville in 1979. His journey began as a Patrol Deputy, tirelessly serving the community until 1986 when duty called him to another jurisdiction. However, his heart remained here, and in 1994, he returned to St. Mary’s County.

Throughout his tenure, Corporal Holton has exemplified the essence of law enforcement, engaging in various roles such as community policing initiatives and child support enforcement. When asked about his enduring commitment, his eyes light up with passion as he speaks of his father’s influence and his love for aiding others. His mantra of approaching each day with a positive outlook reflects his unwavering dedication to public service.

Sheriff Steve Hall aptly captures Corporal Holton’s impact, stating, “I often refer to him as a saint because he is quite possibly the most virtuous and kind person I’ve ever worked with. He looks for ways to help others and be of good use; he has been an example for all of us to follow, and wearing our badge gives Andy more opportunities to change lives. He has been a source of inspiration to me and others in this community, and we are blessed he is a part of our agency.”
