SOLOMONS, Md. — The magic and mysteries of Christmas began Saturday morning in Calvert County with the arrival of Santa Claus on Solomons Island. Santa was escorted by the Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department for the Solomons Business Association’s 43rd Christmas Walk and lighted boat show.
The business association expressed gratitude to Brandi Maloney, chair of this year’s Walk, as well as to the Simpson Family and Sneads Ace Hardware for providing new lights for the Riverwalk. Calvert County’s Department of Economic Development was also thanked for their contributions, and Meadows Farm and Nursery donated the Solomons gazebo Christmas tree. Dowell Elementary students provided decorated ornaments.

“I’m wishing the community a bright and joyful year ahead, filled with hometown spirit and connectedness,” Maloney said.
“The Solomons Christmas Walk is the second largest event on Solomons Island, the first being the Fourth of July. My goal was to bring the community and local businesses together and to give back to them.”

Maloney said vendors were not charged a fee.
“That money should go back to those small business owners,” she said. “We offered many free activities for kids and families: bounce houses, face painting, balloon art, pictures with princesses, and dance performances.”
Maloney highlighted community contributions, including the Solomons Fire Department, Police Department, local cheer and pom squads, and local dancers such as Gracie’s Guys and Gals, Elite Dance Company, and Mystic Caravan. Special guests included Miss Maryland 2021 and Miss International, Rachel Labatt.
“The businesses on the island are such an inspiration. It’s truly a town out of a movie. We celebrated our town and its people this year,” she said.

Santa arrived at the Solomons Mission Center at 1 p.m., where children eagerly waited to see him. He posed for photos with families until 9 p.m., courtesy of 21FIVEPhotography. Santa will be available for photos throughout the week.
The Mission Center, a nonprofit organization, seeks to meet the hunger and clothing needs of the community. Many volunteers and sponsors ensure its generosity continues.
The Grinch was spotted at Bunky’s Charter Boats, stirring up mischief. Despite his antics, he made peace with Santa at Juice Buzz LLC, where the two posed for photos together. Later, the Grinch was seen traveling the island on a motorized scooter and driving a 1964 MG Roadster. His passenger might have been Martha May Whovier, but this remains unconfirmed.
Juice Buzz co-owner Jeanette Kent shared her enthusiasm for the event.
“Seeing us put a smile on people’s faces from our community alongside other local small businesses is beyond rewarding,” Kent said. “I hope the community walks away realizing that the holidays aren’t about how much money you spend, but who you spend it with, and that the local small businesses are definitely the heart of our community. We are here for them and also because of them.”

The Victorian Inn welcomed guests with tours and fresh cookies. Visitors admired the beautifully decorated Christmas trees and cozy parlor room. A TripAdvisor 2023 Traveler’s Choice award winner, the inn offers luxurious elopement packages and electric vehicle charging stations.
The Vendor Fair attracted many shoppers. Trades of Hope vendor Melissa Holland displayed Christmas ornaments from 15 countries. Holland partners with Trades of Hope to end poverty and injustices against women and children.
“The patrons are always so happy and enjoy the items I have on display,” Holland said.
The Harmon House and Simply Social Event Co. hosted guests with tremendous hospitality.

“The festive spirit, beautiful decorations, and wonderful community made it such a memorable evening,” Simply Social’s Stephanie Hornbeak said. “Events like these truly showcase the magic of the season and the heart of Solomons.”
The Christmas parade featured local school bands, pom squads, floats, and fire trucks. Spectators lined the boardwalk to enjoy the lighted boat display on the Patuxent River.

Stephanie Ebb of Inlush Cosmetics said that while turnout was lower this year, the Christmas spirit was in full force.
“There was a wonderful sense of community as people came together to enjoy the festivities and support small, local businesses,” Ebb said.
“It was truly heartwarming to see my daughter’s eyes light up as Santa and his crew drove past on the fire truck. The beautifully decorated boats glowing against the night sky made for a magical sight as they floated by.”
Ebb said her family is already looking forward to next year’s Christmas Walk.
