South Point Church Daycare Expansion Could Add Traffic Signal At Saint Andrews And Fairgrounds Road

LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A concept site plan proposing a 6,778-square-foot addition at SouthPoint Church is under review, with potential traffic changes at a nearby intersection expected to draw community attention.

The project includes plans for a children’s ministry space and a weekday daycare at the church located on Saint Andrews Church Road.

The church already operates SouthPoint Early Learning Center on-site, which provides childcare services for children from infancy through age 12. The proposed addition would expand space for both the daycare and children’s ministry programs.

The expansion is expected to increase daily traffic in the area, particularly during weekday drop-off and pick-up times associated with the daycare, as well as Sunday services.

As part of the concept plan, traffic impacts are being evaluated, including the possibility of a future traffic signal at the intersection of Saint Andrews Church Road and Fairgrounds Road. The intersection is a key access point in the area and already sees steady traffic from nearby residents and fairgrounds events.

The property, which spans more than 47 acres and is zoned for religious assembly use, is currently undergoing site plan review by the St. Mary’s County Department of Land Use and Growth Management.

County agencies will review traffic flow, access points, and infrastructure needs before any approvals are finalized.

A planning commission hearing has not yet been scheduled. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

  1. Here’s an idea- how about widening St. Andrews Church road to say, 2 lanes each direction, dedicated turn lanes each way and shoulders first. It’s bad enough the speed limit is 50 and most people can’t seem to even do that. I mean, we’ve gotten along with no lights on that road forever- there isn’t one at Indian Bridge Rd or any other subdivisions except Wildewood, so why do we need one at Fairgrounds Rd? Can’t be “because of the children” or there would have been 10 lights installed along SCR before now. This light is just a ridiculous as the one proposed at Rt. 5 and Morganza Turner Rd.

  2. About time they did, I think.
There have been far too many fatal accidents along that stretch of St Andrew’s Church Rd. over the years.
Traffic flows at a greater speed than the posted 50 mph along that road, and with Southpoint Church there now, I think it’s a great idea.
People need to be slowed down around here!
