CALIFORNIA, Md. — A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for the Southern Maryland region through 10:00 a.m. Thursday as dangerously cold conditions settle into the area. Residents are urged to take precautions to protect themselves, their pets, pipes, livestock, and property from the frigid temperatures and potentially hazardous conditions.

The advisory comes as bitterly cold northwest winds, gusting between 25 and 30 mph, drive temperatures into the teens and low 20s on Monday, January 20, 2025. Wind chills are expected to drop to the single digits and below zero at times, creating dangerous conditions for prolonged exposure outdoors.

While the forecast aligns with the typically chilly Inauguration Day weather, it won’t break the record cold set at 7° in 1985. However, meteorologists warn that these temperatures are well below seasonal averages and demand extra precautions for safety.

Drivers are advised to watch for slick spots on roadways, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces. Commuters should allow additional time for travel and maintain a safe following distance to prevent accidents.

The National Weather Service recommends limiting time outdoors, dressing in multiple layers, and ensuring pets have adequate shelter and water. For homes, insulating pipes and ensuring heating systems are functioning properly can prevent costly damage during the cold snap.

The frigid weather is expected to linger through Thursday, with wind chills remaining dangerously low at times. Officials urge vigilance as these conditions persist.
