Southern Maryland Sends Four Teams To Football State Championship Games

SOUTHERN MARYLAND — Excitement is building across Southern Maryland as four local high school football teams prepare to compete for state titles at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. Henry E. Lackey, Patuxent, Huntingtown, and Northern have each earned their place in the MPSSAA state championship finals after hard-fought playoff victories.

Calvert County will be especially well represented, with Patuxent, Huntingtown, and Northern all advancing to state title games — a powerful showing for one county. Here’s a look at how Henry E. Lackey, Patuxent, Huntingtown, and Northern earned their spots in this year’s MPSSAA state finals.

Henry E. Lackey High School, in Class 2A/1A, continued its impressive postseason run with a 20-6 win over Liberty in the semifinals. Lackey previously defeated Sparrows Point (42-13) and Calvert (20-14) in earlier rounds.

The Class 2A/1A championship is set for Friday, Dec. 5 at 4 p.m.

Patuxent High School, the No. 1 seed in Class 1A,

Patuxent High School, in Class 1A, reached the state championship after defeating Washington 48–0, Allegany 42–0 and Boonsboro 35–27 in earlier rounds.

The 1A state title game will take place Saturday, Dec. 6 at 12 p.m., with Patuxent facing Fort Hill, which beat Perryville 56-19 in its semifinal matchup.

In Class 2A, Southern Maryland will be guaranteed a state champion

In Class 2A, Southern Maryland is guaranteed a state champion, as both finalists — Huntingtown and Northern — are regional schools. Huntingtown advanced with postseason wins over Maurice J. McDonough (62–0), C. Milton Wright (45–14) and Wicomico (50–20).

Their opponent, Northern High School, continued its late-season surge with victories over Thomas Stone (59–13), Westlake (28–6) and Frederick (35–0) before edging No. 1 Glenelg 21–14 in the semifinals.

The Class 2A championship game will be held Saturday, Dec. 6 at 3:30 p.m.
