They wake up for practice before some of us even go to bed. They get to see the sunrise everyday.

They bring a new meaning to โ€œwater sport.โ€ Itโ€™s the St. Maryโ€™s College crew team. The team came into existence during 1988/1989, and has been going strong ever since.

Meghan Geraghty, a senior biology major, is the teamโ€™s current Vice President.

Her favorite part about being on the team is definitely the people she surrounds herself with. โ€œThey are a very dedicated, hard-working group of people, but definitely know how to have fun.โ€

In addition to the 65 people currently on the team, the team is coached by students as well.

What is Meghanโ€™s least favorite thing about being on the team? โ€œEarly mornings!โ€ When the team practices on the water, they have to be at the boathouse by 5:30 am. โ€œSometimes it is hard to get out of bed, but once I am down on the water, it definitely wakes me up and gives me a fresh start to my day,โ€ says Meghan. During the winter season (where the team practices in the Athletics and Recreation Center), they get to sleep in a little bit, but only until 6:00 am.

As a senior who has been on the crew team all four years of college, Meghan has had some interesting experiences. A few of her most memorable times were having a fish jump in her lap (twice!), and being on the water, stuck in a hurricane. One of her favorite memories happened this fall, when her boat took 1st place in a 13 mile row at Wye Island.

When asked how Meghan balances being on the team with being a student, she says โ€œI drink a lot of coffee!โ€ She also attributes planning, prioritizing, and staying organized to her success.
