ST. MARY’S COUNTY, Md. โ A Coastal Flood Watch is in effect for St. Mary’s County shoreline areas through Sunday evening with up to one foot of inundation above ground level possible in low-lying areas due to tidal flooding. The watch began at 4 p.m. and continues through the evening, especially around the time of high tide.
According to the National Weather Service, tides are running two to two and a half feet above normal. At 3.5 feet, water covers roads on Saint George Island, reaches into yards, and approaches structures. To the east, inundation is occurring at multiple marinas off St. Mary’s River, Smith Creek, and Jutland Creek.
High tide times for Sunday evening include Point Lookout at 6:44 p.m., Coltons Point at 7:48 p.m., and Piney Point at 7:12 p.m. Residents in low-lying coastal areas should expect minor to moderate flooding during these peak tide periods.
An earlier Coastal Flood Advisory was in effect until 9 a.m. Sunday morning with up to one half foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas. The situation escalated to a watch for the evening high tide cycle due to continued elevated water levels.
Residents in affected areas should move vehicles and valuables away from vulnerable locations and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Low-lying roads near marinas and waterfront properties are most susceptible to tidal flooding during high tide periods.
The National Weather Service advises monitoring conditions and staying alert for possible upgrades to warnings if conditions worsen. Coastal residents should remain vigilant through the evening high tide cycle.
