
LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The Commissioners of St. Mary’s County on Tuesday formally honored Dr. Deborah Dennie, principal of Leonardtown Middle School, recognizing her as Maryland Middle School Principal of the Year during their meeting in Leonardtown.
Dr. Dennie received the commendation at the commissioners’ Feb. 24 meeting, where county leaders praised her leadership, mentorship, and commitment to fostering a positive school culture.
The honor follows her designation as Maryland Middle School Principal of the Year by the Maryland Association of Secondary Principals, alongside Dr. Ryan Durr, principal of Meade High School, Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

In the official commendation, the commissioners cited her “distinguished designation” and called the achievement a reflection of her commitment to excelling in leadership, serving through mentorship, and contributing to a positive school environment.
Dr. Dennie serves as principal of Leonardtown Middle School, where she has been recognized for her dedication to student achievement and staff development. County officials said her leadership has strengthened the school community and elevated educational standards within St. Mary’s County.
“Your outstanding work and contributions have made St. Mary’s County a great place to live,” the commendation reads, adding that she has “rightfully earned the community’s gratitude, respect, and admiration.”
The commendation was issued and signed by the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County and dated Feb. 24, 2026.
County officials said the recognition not only celebrates Dr. Dennie’s personal achievement but also highlights the strength of public education across St. Mary’s County.
