LEONARDTOWN, Md. — St. Mary’s County History Day 2025 is set to take place on Saturday, March 8, at the Leonardtown Public Library. This district-level contest, affiliated with Maryland History Day and National History Day, invites middle and high school students to engage in in-depth research and create projects centered around this year’s theme, “Rights and Responsibilities in History.”

Students can submit projects in one of five categories: research paper, exhibit, documentary, website, or performance. The competition offers a unique opportunity for students to develop critical skills, including research, analysis, writing, time management, and public speaking—skills that will benefit them throughout their academic and professional careers.

Registration closes on March 1, 2025, with all project submissions due the same day. Winners of the St. Mary’s County contest will advance to the state-level competition on May 2, 2025, and potentially to the National History Day contest, which will be held from June 8-12, 2025.

St. Mary’s County History Day is organized by Historic Sotterley in partnership with the St. Mary’s County Library, Maryland Humanities, and the St. Mary’s County Public Library.

In a recent Facebook post, Historic Sotterley encouraged student participation: “Has your student started their St. Mary’s County History Day project yet? It’s time to get working! St. Mary’s County History Day is a district-level contest associated with Maryland History Day and National History Day. It is an opportunity for middle and high school students to do self-guided research and create projects about topics that interest them.”

Students can participate independently of classroom assignments, making it an excellent at-home learning opportunity. Winners will receive awards and advance to the state-level contest.

For more information on how to participate, visit the St. Mary’s County History Day website or contact the event coordinator, Katherine Humphries, at edteam@sotterley.org.
