LEONARDTOWN, Md. — There’s something almost magical about walking into a space filled with thousands of stories waiting to be discovered, and later this month, that experience returns to St. Mary’s County in a big way.

The Friends of the St. Mary’s County Library will host their highly anticipated Annual Spring Book Sale from April 24-26 at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds, bringing together book lovers, bargain hunters, and community supporters for one of the county’s largest literary events of the year.

More than 100,000 items, from beloved children’s classics to puzzles, games, and DVDs, will fill multiple buildings across the fairgrounds, transforming the space into what organizers describe as a “treasure hunt” for readers of all ages.

A Weekend Built For Book Lovers

The three-day event kicks off Friday, April 24, with a members-only preview sale from noon to 8 p.m., giving early access to those who support the nonprofit through membership. The sale opens to the public Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by a Sunday bag sale from noon to 4 p.m., where shoppers can fill bags with books at discounted prices.

Organizers say the scale of the event continues to grow year after year, fueled by steady community donations.

“We’ve been so busy sorting and packing books as the donations roll in non-stop,” organizers shared in the newsletter, noting the overwhelming support from residents clearing shelves and passing stories along to new readers.

More Than Just Books

While books remain the centerpiece, the sale has evolved into something much broader. Shoppers can expect a wide selection of puzzles, board games, music CDs, DVDs, and even specialty items like prints and audiobooks.

Volunteers carefully check many of the items before they hit the shelves, ensuring games are complete and media is in good condition, all while keeping prices accessible, with some items starting as low as $1.

The expanded layout, including a dedicated space for children’s and young adult books, aims to make browsing easier and more enjoyable for families.

Behind the scenes, the event is a massive community effort.

Held during National Volunteer Week, organizers say the timing highlights the critical role volunteers play in making the sale possible — from lifting boxes and setting up displays to organizing thousands of items across multiple buildings.

“We need to gather a mighty crew of volunteers to make it all come together,” organizers noted, encouraging residents to sign up and be part of the effort.

Supporting Local Libraries

Proceeds from the sale directly benefit the St. Mary’s County Library system, helping fund programs, services, and resources for the community.

The nonprofit also continues to accept donations year-round, with books and media collected, sorted, and prepared for future sales. Items that don’t sell during the event are redistributed or sold in bulk, ensuring they stay out of landfills and in circulation.

As donations continue to grow, organizers say one of their biggest challenges is space — and they are actively seeking additional storage or workspace within the community to expand operations.

A Community Tradition

For many, the Spring Book Sale is more than just a place to find a good read, it’s a tradition rooted in community connection, sustainability, and a shared love of learning.

Whether attendees leave with a stack of novels, a childhood favorite rediscovered, or a new puzzle for family night, organizers say every purchase supports something bigger.

“This sale is an enormous community effort,” organizers wrote. “We are grateful for all your time, energy, and goodwill.”
