Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Michael J. Martirano, announces ย administrative ย appointments ย made ย by ย the Board of Education at its meeting of June 28, 2006.
The Board appointed Mr. Norman Carpenter to the position of assistant principal at Hollywood Elementary School.ย He most recently served as a middle school science teacher in Stafford, VA, but also has experience as an assistant principal, middle school math teacher, and elementary school classroom teacher in Virginia public school systems.ย Prior to embarking on a career in education, Mr. Carpenter served as a Surface Warfare Officer with the United States Navy.ย He earned a Master of Education degree in educational leadership and administration from George Mason University, a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from the College of Sante Fe, and a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal investigation from Eastern Kentucky University.ย
Ms. Cathy Cutright was named assistant principal at Leonardtown Middle School.ย Ms. Cutright rejoins the school system after most recently serving as an instructional specialist at Dr. Mudd and Indian Head Elementary Schools in the Charles County Public School system.ย Her experience includes serving as a leadership intern and special education teacher at Margaret Brent Middle School, a learning disabilities teacher in Virginia, and an English/language arts teacher in West Virginia.ย Ms. Cutright holds a Masterโs degree in specific learning disabilities from Marshall University and a Bachelorโs degree in English and social studies from West Virginia Institute of Technology.
The Board also named Mr. Robert DeLuca assistant principal at Leonardtown Elementary School.ย He joins the school system after most recently serving as a principal intern at Kensington-Parkwood Elementary School in the Montgomery County Public School system.ย Mr. DeLuca has also served as a graduate assistant at the University of Maryland, College Park, an elementary classroom teacher in the United Kingdom and Montgomery County Public Schools, and as a youth advisor and mental health worker in Pennsylvania.ย He earned his Master of Education degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Maryland, College Park, and his Bachelor of Science degree in human development and family studies from The Pennsylvania State University.
Ms. Marie Hankinson was named assistant principal at Benjamin Banneker Elementary School.ย She most recently served as a gifted resource teacher with the Virginia Beach City Public School system, but has also served as a human resources intern and an elementary classroom teacher in the Virginia Beach school system, as well as a librarian and elementary classroom teacher in Belle Chasse, LA.ย Ms. Hankinson earned a Master of Science degree in business management from Troy State University, a Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood education from Norfolk State University, and an Associate of Arts degree in business administration from County College of Morris, Randolph, NJ.
The Board appointed Ms. Cheryl Long to the position of assistant principal at Spring Ridge Middle School.ย Ms. Long, who joined the school system in 1998, currently serves as an instructional resources teacher at Leonardtown Elementary School.ย She has also served as an elementary classroom teacher at Park Hall Elementary, Benjamin Banneker Elementary, and Webster Hill Elementary in West Hartford, CT, and taught high school algebra to rising ninth graders in the SMCPS sum
