
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s volleyball dropped a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night, falling 3-0 (11-25, 21-25, 22-25) to host Christopher Newport University inside the Freeman Center.
The Seahawks (2-4) pushed back after a slow start, nearly forcing a fourth set behind strong efforts from Erianna Mendieta (12 kills, 13 digs) and Stella Marrero (20 digs).
After CNU (4-3) controlled the opening set, St. Mary’s found rhythm in the second frame. The Seahawks built momentum with kills from Maggie Mohler and Maya Mauro, while Arielle Lubeck added a service ace to help SMCM grab an early lead. Mendieta led the charge with five kills in the set, but the Captains closed on a late run to secure the 25-21 win.
The third set saw another back-and-forth battle. Hope Parrish and Mohler made plays at the net, while setters Camilla Galeano (14 assists) and Lubeck (6 assists) spread the offense effectively. St. Mary’s trimmed the deficit to 24-22 before CNU held on for the sweep.
As a team, the Seahawks tallied 29 kills, 50 digs, and four blocks on the night.
St. Mary’s returns to action this weekend when they host a tri-match with Eastern Mennonite and Regent .
