On Defense of Marriage Act: โToday the Supreme Court stood on the right side of history by advancing the cause of equality and justice for all Americans. By first passing and then upholding marriage equality on the ballot, Marylanders should be proud of the important role we played together in the fight for equal rights. While the path to justice and equality is often long and challenging, today we took a major step ahead.โ
On Voting Rights Act: โFor decades, the Voting Rights Act has ensured that nobody, regardless of their zip code, race or ethnicity, could be denied a voice in our elections so itโs deeply disappointing how the Supreme Court ruled in this case. The Voting Rights Act prevented states with a history of discrimination from changing their voting laws without federal approval, however with the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, this protection no longer exists. We need to be working to make voting easier and more accessible, not rolling back voting rights.โ
