PINEY POINT, Md. — St. Mary’s County is commemorating its one and only Revolutionary War battle on April 11 and 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in an event promising to be educational, family-friendly and a fitting tribute to St. Mary’s County’s historical role.
This event is part of the Southern Maryland Semiquincentennial, Maryland’s 250th and America 250th celebrations. It commemorates Southern Maryland’s contributions to the nation’s founding. Admission is free to all and will take place both at Piney Point Lighthouse Museum and Historic Park and St. George Island.
The event includes re-enactments, living encampments, 18th-century games, activities and vendors, story time, a chance to meet Lord Dumore, and much more.
Note that part of the event includes a narrated boat tour — tickets for the tour are $5 and capacity is limited. Anyone interested in attending can view the full details online.
Here’s what you can expect, plus some photos from previous years.
Reenactments
The reenactments are definitely one of the most exciting parts of Rebels and Redcoats, as you’ll get to see historically accurate portrayals of life during the Revolutionary War. The reenactments will include life in camp and, of course, the battle St. Mary’s County is known for.

Vendors
At Rebels and Redcoats, you’ll get to shop with time-period-themed vendors selling handmade goods and more. Basically, anything you’d find during the year 1776. This is a fun way to get immersed in the time period and get some hands-on learning about life during the Revolutionary War.

Games
Ready for some hopscotch and hoop rolling? Rebels and Redcoats will be filled with themed games and activities for kids and adults. Kids will be able to play games and learn about what life was like in the 18th century — and hopefully, how lucky they have it now.

Food Trucks
Don’t worry, you won’t be limited to 18th-century cuisine at this event. Food trucks will be onsite to serve up contemporary favorites from Southern Maryland. You can spend the day learning about and living history, and then still satisfy your hunger with something delicious from your own time.
