LEONARDTOWN, Md. – For the first time in nearly 30 years, The Rex Theatre, located at 22695 Washington St, Leonardtown, MD, will host dinner and a movie!
On Thursday, June 13, starting at 7 p.m., the theatre will put on a first-come, first-serve viewing along with an arrangement of food. You can make reservations by calling 301-475-1512.
The theatre made the announcement via their Facebook page and asked customers which movie they would like to see. So far, films such as Grease, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Back to the Future, and Wizard of Oz were just some of the many suggestions people had.
Ever since the 1940’s, The Rex has been a staple of Southern Maryland.
The Rex Theatre, originally known as the New Theatre, was opened on December 10, 1941, by Kenneth Duke. Since the building closed in 1986, it has been used as a restaurant. Interestingly enough, the old REX Theater was not the first theater in Leonardtown. Kenneth Duke first operated a silent-era theater in the former Town Hall and then later in the Duke building.

IN July of 69 my new wife & I moved into one of 3 apartments over the REX Theater at $100. A mon. We listened to ( a boy named sue ) & smelled popcorn every night.
Can think of worse things to smell all night !😜 What ya didn’t realize, was everything you owned probably smelled like popcorn .😂
