St. Maryโs County Board of County Commissioners is pleased to invite the public to a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for phase two of the Three Notch Trail.ย The ceremony will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m., near the entrance of the Northern Senior Activity Center, 29655 Charlotte Hall Road in Charlotte Hall.ย The Friends of the Three Notch Trail will lead a group bike ride and walk immediately after the ceremony.ย A limited number of bicycles are available for use; however, citizens are encouraged to bring their own bicycles and helmets for the ride.ย ย
The recreational trail is being constructed along the County owned railroad right-of-way (ROW), which runs south from Hughesville to Lexington Park. The trail is a non-motorized pedestrian, bicycle and equestrian trail, is constructed of asphalt and is 10 feet wide in most sections. ย
This newly constructed area of the trail provides connections between the Charlotte Hall Library, the St. Maryโs County Farmersโ Market, the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, the St. Maryโs County Welcome Center and the Northern Senior Activity Center and links the villages of New Market and Charlotte Hall.
This new section creates a 3.25 mile stretch of trail from MD Route 236 in Mechanicsville north to Deborah Drive. Other sections of the trail are in various stages of development and include:ย ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Phase III – a 2 mile section from Wildewood to Wal-Mart, which is being constructed by several private developers in the California area.ย The South Plaza section is complete; the Wal-Mart section is complete; the Wildewood section is complete; and discussions are ongoing with the developers Kmart, First Colony and St. Maryโs Marketplace (former Bay Center) regarding construction of the trail along their frontage.
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย Phase IVA – the ยฝ mile section from Wal-Mart to MD Route 237, Chancellorโs Run Road, is currently under construction and should be completed by spring 2009.ย Phase IVB, the 2.5 mile section from Chancellorโs Run Road to Pegg Road, will be constructed in the future as part of the FDR Blvd. community road project.
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย Phase V – the 3 mile section from John V. Baggett Park in Laurel Grove north to MD 5 in Mechanicville, is currently in the design and engineering stage.
