PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — After five years serving as president of Calvert’s Board of County Commissioners (BOCC), President Earl “Buddy” Hance announced during the Dec. 16 meeting that he was not seeking a nomination.
Commissioner Todd Ireland was promptly nominated and approved in a unanimous vote by his fellow commissioners. Ireland previously served as vice president of the board.
Hance made the announcement after the usual top-of-meeting items: a prayer and the pet of the week presentation.
“I’m not going to be the board president within the next five minutes,” Hance said. “So I just wanted to thank my fellow board members for giving me the opportunity to be the president. It’s a privilege and an honor.”
County Administrator Linda Turner called for nominations, and Commissioner Mike Hart nominated Ireland.
Ireland thanked Hance for his service and for keeping the citizens front of mind during his time leading the board. Commissioner Mark Cox was then voted in as the new vice president, replacing Ireland.
Ireland took office in December 2022. According to his biography on the Calvert County government website, he served as a Calvert County Sheriff’s Deputy for nearly 29 years, retiring as a captain in December 2021. He is a lifelong Calvert County resident whose family history is deeply entrenched in the county. He resides on his family’s farm in Huntingtown, a longstanding tobacco farm that is now in a conservation program.
Notably, Santa Claus also attended this week’s meeting, but did not get to vote on the BOCC president issue.

Looks very well nourished. I wonder if he is disciplined enough to get our county budget under control without additional tax increases. I doubt it. Like I said he looks very well nourished ie no self discipline, worthless other than for photo ops and collecting a salary.
Many things can be improved. Instead of calling names, why not watch meetings (in person, online, or recorded) and make suggestions (in person, by email, or by snail mail. We don’t need complainers, we need thoughtful citizens testifying to actual problems, and making sensible suggestions for improvement. You can contact the Commissioners, the County Administrator Linda Turner, or even your local MD Delegate, to let them know of problems, fraud, waste, inefficiency, or abuse.
