Thomas Johnson Bridge

SOLOMONS, Md. – The Maryland State Highway Administration will perform routine maintenance on two bridges in southern Maryland this month. Maintenance crews will clean the bridge grates and drains along the MD 4 Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge on Sunday, April 21, and along the MD 231 Benedict Bridge on Sunday, April 28.

Crews will begin work at 6 a.m. each Sunday morning, weather permitting. Lanes will open to traffic no later than 2 p.m. that afternoon. Drivers will be guided using a flagging operation with one of the two lanes closed while work is underway. Portable variable message signs will be in place to provide notification of the upcoming work.

The State Highway Administration understands roadwork can be an inconvenience but is necessary to maintain a safe and reliable highway system.

Drivers are asked to slow down in the work zone for the safety of all drivers and the crews working to improve our roadways. Customers may contact the SHA District 5 Office at 410-841-1000 or toll-free at 1-800-331-5603 for additional information.

    1. Saw the bridge built in the early 70’s, saw it open in the late 70’s. I’m now 70 and won’t live to see it replaced if I make it into my 80’s.
The Governor in Annapolis right now does not give a care about a new bridge in Southern Maryland. His main priorities are in Baltimore. Getting that F. S. Key Bridge rebuilt in Baltimore is his main bridge concern. There’s a lot more votes for him waiting to keep him in office in that area than there is in St. Mary’s and Calvert Counties.
