DUPONT, Wa. – A tragic accident has left several people dead and many injured after an Amtrak train derailed onto an interstate South of Tacoma, Washington.

According to several sources, on the morning of December 18, Amtrak train 501 departed from Tacoma around 8:00 a.m. carrying approximately 78 passengers. The train derailed shortly after passing the city of DuPont causing 13 train cars to jump track, several of which landing on Interstate 5, killing six and injuring many passengers according to officials.

In response to the crash, Washington Governor, Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.ย The National Transportation Safety Board is sending a group to from D.C to Washington to inspect the wreck.

Amtrak Cascades Train 501, operating from Seattle and Portland, derailed south of Tacoma, Wash. There were approximately 78 passengers and five crew members on board. Initial reports are that some injuries are reported to passengers and crew, and taken to local medical facilities for treatment.

Service from Seattle to points north and east is continuing to operate. Amtrak Cascades Trains 504 and 509 are cancelled. No alternate transportation will be available.
