CALLAWAY, Md. – Two men have been charged in connection with an alleged retail theft incident at a WEIS supermarket on Point Lookout Road in St. Mary’s County.
According to charging documents, Austin Leaman, 29, and Rashard Brown, 30, entered the store on January 2, 2025, after arriving in a white Ford Focus with a Virginia registration.
Surveillance footage and witness reports indicate that the two men walked through the store together, collecting multiple grocery items and placing them inside a red shopping basket. When they approached the front of the store, Leaman exited first, while Brown remained inside. After waiting near the exit, Brown walked out carrying the shopping basket, passing all points of sale without paying for the items.
A store employee identified the suspects based on previous theft incidents. Deputies reviewed surveillance video and matched Leaman’s and Brown’s identities to their MVA records, further confirming their involvement.
The stolen merchandise, totaling $196.57, included various grocery items such as cereal, produce, frozen food, and two chicken sandwiches. The WEIS shopping basket, valued at $125, was also taken.
Leaman has been charged with theft of $100 to under $1,500, a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a $500 fine. Court records indicate that Leaman already had an active warrant at the time of this incident, leading investigators to request an additional warrant for his arrest. He is scheduled for a preliminary inquiry hearing on February 21, 2025, in St. Mary’s District Court.
Brown is also charged with theft of $100 to under $1,500, a misdemeanor carrying the same potential penalty. His preliminary inquiry was initially scheduled for February 21, 2025, but was rescheduled to March 21, 2025, after authorities were unable to serve his summons.
