LA PLATA, Md. — The University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center is seeking $1.5 million in state bond funding to support major renovations aimed at improving critical care infrastructure and expanding services. The Charles County Board of Commissioners expressed full support for the application during its April 8 meeting.

The bond funding would help support a $6 million renovation project, scheduled to begin next year, that focuses on relocating the Interventional Radiology Lab to existing shell space adjacent to the surgical suite. The relocation is intended to streamline care and improve patient outcomes through updated technology and improved accessibility.

Additional renovations include developing new storage for operating room supplies and equipment, relocating nuclear medicine into the former Interventional Radiology Lab, reconfiguring imaging offices and workspaces, and expanding material management storage.

Albert Zangor, chief administrative officer at UM Charles Regional, told commissioners the funding will support efforts to offer a more comprehensive range of medical services within the county. He emphasized that the Interventional Radiology Lab upgrade is central to that goal and scheduled for construction in 2026.

The commissioners voted unanimously to approve the letter of support for the hospital’s bond bill application. The funds would be administered through the Maryland Hospital Association if approved by the state.

  1. This hospital is nothing but a glorified band aid stand. The level of care here is atrocious at best and sends more lives to the morgue than they save.
