Huntingtown, MD ย – An overnight electrical storm is being identified as the cause of an early-morning fire that destroyed a garage in Calvert County, state officials reported.

According to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office, the blaze occurred Wednesday morning, June 24 at a residence on Solomons Island Road in Huntingtown.

โ€œThe garage was destroyed by a fire caused by a lightning strike from an electrical storm that passed through the area,โ€ stated Dfm. Don Brenneman. โ€œThere were no reported injuries.โ€

Damage to the 40-by-20-foot free-standing, wood-frame structure is estimated at $50,000.

Thirty firefighters from Huntingtown, Dunkirk, Prince Frederick and St. Leonard were dispatched to the one-alarm blaze, which was reported shortly before 5 a.m. by a neighbor. Crews brought the fire under control in 30 minutes.

On Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at about 5:00 a.m., units responded to a building fire on Solomonโ€™s Island Road near Calvert Bowling building.

As units arrived on the scene they found the garage fully engulfed in flames.ย  The firefighters went to work controlling the fire immediately. The building is a total loss.ย 

Units from Huntingtown, Prince Frederick, Dunkirk and St. Leonard volunteer fire departments were on the scene to assist with the fire.

The right shoulder and both main lanes of traffic going South was closed from 5:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m., but they still had the left merge/shoulder lane open for traffic to go South.
