LA PLATA, Md. — Charles County officials and consultants from the KFH Group presented a Five-Year Transit Development Plan (TDP) to the Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
During the discussion, commissioners noted that students in more urban areas often rely on public transit for after-school activities. They suggested exploring similar coordination with Charles County Public Schools and adding direct routes from high schools and community centers as new routes are implemented.
Community Input & Needs
The planning process incorporated significant public outreach, including surveys of riders and community members. Among key findings:
- 92% of community respondents expressed a need for more or improved transit
- Top service requests included Sunday service, more frequent buses, extended evening hours and improved pedestrian access to stops

Proposed Improvements
Recommendations outlined in the TDP include:
- Route realignment: Shifting the 301 Connector Route to St. Charles Parkway to improve access for growing residential areas and the College of Southern Maryland
- Microtransit pilots: Launching on-demand transit service in St. Charles East and West, with future expansion to La Plata, Pinefield and Indian Head
- Sunday service: Rolling out Sunday service using microtransit models for cost-effectiveness
- Bus stop enhancements: Upgrading infrastructure for better safety, comfort and visibility
The plan was unanimously approved by the Board of County Commissioners. While adoption does not guarantee immediate implementation, it positions the county to seek future state and federal transit funding. VanGO service remains free to the public.
