WALDORF, Md. — Charles County’s VanGO transit system is reducing service on routes this week due to ongoing maintenance issues affecting air conditioning systems on some buses.

Effective immediately, the 301 Connector and Indian Head routes will operate with only one bus instead of two through the remainder of the week. Additionally, paratransit (door-to-door) service is canceled for all trips except for dialysis-related transportation, which will continue due to its critical medical necessity.

The changes follow rider complaints on Facebook about uncomfortably high temperatures and broken air conditioning units on several buses, as Southern Maryland has faced extreme heat this week. The region is experiencing heat indexes nearing 100 degrees, with the National Weather Service issuing advisories due to the risk of heat-related illness.

VanGO staff are contacting affected paratransit passengers to notify them of cancellations and assist with rescheduling when possible.

Officials said restoring rider comfort and safety is a priority, and full service will resume once repairs are complete.
