PORT TOBACCO, Md. — A Virginia man has been indicted in connection with a drunken UTV crash that killed a 27-year-old Port Tobacco woman last fall, according to court records.

Jacob Lee Darbie, 31, of King George, Virginia, was the driver of the utility terrain vehicle involved in the Sept. 5, 2025 crash in Charles County. A grand jury indicted Darbie on charges including negligent manslaughter by vehicle, homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, and negligent driving of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He also faces several related traffic charges, including driving under the influence, driving while impaired and reckless driving.

According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at about 11:30 p.m. to the 7600 block of Carol Drive in Port Tobacco for a reported crash involving a UTV.

Investigators determined the UTV was traveling eastbound when it left the roadway for unknown reasons, struck multiple fixed objects and an embankment, and came to rest.

Gabrielle Wareham, 27, of Port Tobacco, was pronounced dead at the scene. Darbie was flown to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Court records show a bench warrant was issued and served to Darbie on Feb. 17, 2026. The case remains pending in Charles County Circuit Court.

  1. Such a good guy. Bad decisions made yes, but nothing intentional at all! I am so sorry a life was lost, but never has anyone gone out partying with the intentions of hurting someone. I know he hurts incredibly! She was a friend of his. No malace…no intention. Bad choices from both. Him to drive, her to get in the vehicle. Weekend of fun turned tragic. My heart hurts for both!

  2. Couldn’t have said it better myself he started his own business did great job. Got married had a baby, hard-working man out having fun tragedy struck .🙏🙏🙏 for both families involved in this tragedy.
