Community Outcry After Students With Disabilities Were Denied Service At Waldorf Cracker Barrel

WALDORF, Md. — A planned Community-Based Instruction (CBI) outing to Cracker Barrel in Waldorf turned sour on Dec. 3 when students with developmental and intellectual disabilities were reportedly denied service by staff and management. The incident has drawn widespread community condemnation, as detailed in an email from a teacher and interviews with parents.

According to the teacher’s email to parents, the group, which included students from Dr. James Craik Elementary School’s SOAR classroom, faced resistance from servers, hosts, and management. Despite prior assurances that a reservation was unnecessary, the students and staff were reportedly told they would not be served.

“When we arrived at Cracker Barrel, we all walked inside and immediately the servers and hosts were very rude to the staff about the amount of people who were from [the school],” the email stated. Despite offering to split the group into smaller tables and clarifying that only students would be dining, the staff allegedly refused to accommodate them.

The teacher further alleged that Tranesia Scriber, the general manager, dismissed the group’s efforts to explain the nature of their outing, saying, “We cannot accommodate to your group and will not be serving them. Please have our establishment removed from the list because we don’t accommodate to this type of group.”

The group ultimately placed a to-go order, but even that process was fraught with delays and poor treatment.

Dustin Reed, whose daughter Madelynn was among the students, took to Facebook to express his frustration and rally community support. His post sparked an outpouring of solidarity, with many condemning the treatment as discriminatory.

In an interview with The BayNet, Reed described his experience attempting to address the situation in person. “I went there today [Dec. 4] and talked to her [Scriber]. She cut me off before I finished my sentence and shooed me away when I tried to ask her questions regarding the incident,” he said.

Madelynn’s mother, Johnna Penrod, emphasized the importance of these outings for the students. “This is terrible and shouldn’t be tolerated. We’re in 2024. At some point, it has to be understood that it shouldn’t be us preparing them [the children] for the world, but the world accommodating them,” she said.

The SOAR classroom, which supports five students with developmental disabilities, integrates monthly CBI trips to help students practice social skills and adapt to community environments. At the time of the incident, the group was joined by students from another school participating in the Achieves program, which also focuses on fostering social and community-based skills for students with disabilities.

“This has never happened before,” Penrod said, noting the usual success of such trips.

Reed and Penrod have expressed hope that larger media outlets will take notice of the incident. However, according to Reed, at least one network news organization indicated they would only cover the story if the family could organize a protest of 100 or more people.

In response, Reed and other community members are organizing a demonstration outside the restaurant. “We’re looking to do it on a Sunday, probably around the time that church would be getting out,” Reed said, noting support from several local residents.

The BayNet contacted the Cracker Barrel Waldorf location for comment. The manager on duty, identified only as Joe, said, “I am not sure I know anything about that [incident].” Messages left for Scriber have not yet been returned.

The incident has raised broader concerns about how businesses accommodate individuals with disabilities. “This is unjust,” Penrod said.

Cracker Barrel’s corporate office has yet to issue a statement. The BayNet will continue to follow this story as it develops.

  1. That place has really gone downhill. We ordered to go last week and the order was close to an hour wait after the time it was supposed to be ready. On top of that the order was totally messed up and the food wasn’t good. I told my wife I would never go back. The one in California MD is much better.

  2. Very unfortunate! Me personally would have never spent a dime at this facility plenty of other places in Waldorf that deserved these folks monies.

  3. As someone who has dealt with the manager, Tranesia Scriber, numerous times, i can absolutely confirm she’s rude as hell and always has an attitude so this behavior does not surprise me in the least. I really hope Corporate does something about this!

    1. That is exactly what my experience has been. Rude and the workers are just as rude at check out. they have horrible customer service way before this incident.

  4. This is very frustrating to hear as a person with a disability myself I’m not supporting Cracker Barrel anymore until they apologize and do better!!!

  5. As the creator of the post and father of one of those children. The protest will be held on December 15th at 1:00pm at this location.

    1. This sickens me. Please give an update on the resolution. Because I will not go to Cracker Barrel again and warn everyone I know to stop giving them their money until they give these children the respect they deserve. This makes me sick to my stomach.

  6. As someone who has frequented this restaurant numerous times, I can honestly say this is a surprise. Not only is this one of the busiest locations off Crain Highway, but it is the nicest in my experience. Could it be a misunderstanding on both parts or poor communication throughout the whole experience? What are we protesting for this protest on the 15th? Is it going to be outside or in the building? Sundays are one of the busiest days for Cracker Barrel. Are we stopping those coming from church to get food at the establishment? I have too many unanswered questions.

  7. I will be there to show support. Is there a Facebook post I can share about the protest?

    1. There is a FB page for the Waldorf Cracker Barrel…
…. spread the word and make Cracker Barrel corporate take notice

  8. Does this place hold a public license? IF so, they should either serve the public or lose the license.

  9. “Cracker Barrel’s corporate office has yet to issue a statement.”

Let Corporate know they need to do something like fire the manager. If the employees are rude, that’s on the manager. No excuse, absolutely none, for this to have happened.

  10. I’m not defending cracker barrel. There are 2 sides toevery story + we have yet to hear from CB. What do they have to say for themselves? Lets go ahead + ask something unasked — did someone there say they didn’t want to the crowd\ didn’t want the crowd to stay?

    1. Exactly Thanks so much ,,is always TWO VERSIONS ??? WHAT I hear about is this group did Not want to accomodate in the other room where was not servers at all ……?????

  11. Easy way to get an answer is to hire a lawyer who practices disability law to sue the establishment for civil rights violations in failing to serve individuals at a place of public accommodation.

  12. “at least one network news organization indicated they would only cover the story if the family could organize a protest of 100 or more people.”

They, “news’s outlets” should be covering it regardless of the number.

  13. I am so disappointed in this Cracker Barrel. My grandson has ASD and goes to a special school where they take them on outings like this. The outings are very important for the children because it teaches them social skills and life skills. If my child were treated like that, I also, would be fuming. They need to apologize to those children and do better in the future.

  14. Shame on you Cracker Barrel. You lost my business forever. I will be protesting on the 15th in spirit.

  15. CrackerBarrel should be ashamed of themselves! I have a sister with similar disabilities. Everyone should be treated the same period. I would be honored to sign your petition and be at the top of the list. If you need help having news media to pick up this story I will be glad to help.

  16. “I am not sure I know anything about that [incident].” Either you do or you don’t, and I’m pretty sure that you DO.

  17. I smell a huge lawsuit coming! Despicable and disgusting behavior should be held accountable. Its time for Cracker Barrel to step up make this right!
