WALDORF, Md. — The Charles County Board of Fire and Rescue formally recognized the separation of Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department Stations 3 and 12 during its March 20 meeting, following a unanimous membership vote earlier this year.

The decision to divide the two stations — Station 3, located at 3245 Old Washington Road, and Station 12, at 7000 Saint Florian Drive — was originally planned nearly three decades ago, with an expectation to separate within five years. However, the move was delayed until now due to organizational growth and operational needs.

JW King, president of the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department, submitted a letter of information to the board outlining the transition, which is expected to be completed by June 2025. The letter detailed the steps being taken to establish independent operations for both fire and EMS divisions, including the formation of dedicated transition committees and legal counsel involvement to ensure compliance.

As part of the transition, there is a corporate restructuring process that includes updates to its articles of incorporation and bylaws. Once complete, these revisions will be presented for membership approval.

Financially, the stations have maintained separate accounts to prevent commingling of funds from the start. Station 12 has designated an individual to learn treasury operations, and both stations are already listed separately in budget distribution.

The separation and naming process for Station 12 was determined through member participation. A recorded vote solidified the decision to split, and an in-person meeting selected a new station name. The new name has not yet been announced.
