CALVERT COUNTY, Md. — The Calvert County library is holding a prize drawing on Saturday, July 12, to mark the official halfway point of its countywide summer reading challenge, Calvert Reads.
The prize drawing is a way to celebrate everyone who’s participated in this year’s summer reading challenge so far. Registered participants can log in to their Calvert Library Beanstack account or the Beanstack app and enter to win the prizes shown.
Entries are determined by the number of tickets earned through minutes read so far — and prize hopefuls can log minutes and register up until the drawing. Prize options include craft kits, games, toys and tickets to Orioles games and the National Aquarium. There’s even an option for a $100 grocery store gift card for participating adults, or kids who have been dreaming of a mega-sized snack budget.
Each summer, the library holds a countywide summer reading challenge. The 2025 theme is “Color Our World,” which invites participants to explore “our vibrant world” through reading and fun activities.
The summer reading challenge is measured in minutes, not tasks completed, which helps it feel accessible; people of all ages read at different paces, so the minutes format can take that “have to finish your homework” pressure off. It also makes room to log activities done in smaller doses.
The library has other reading challenges, such as the popular 500 by 5 challenge, which encourages parents to read with their children by logging the books they read together before age 5.
The next drawing will be on Aug. 16 and offers a different set of prizes, so make sure to enter now to celebrate your (halfway) summer reading success.
