SOUTHERN MARYLAND – Southern Maryland residents are waking up to a winter wonderland after overnight snowfall, with more severe winter weather on the way. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the region, effective until 1:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

Heavy Snow and Ice Forecast

The storm is expected to deliver a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to Southern Maryland. Total snow and sleet accumulations are predicted to range from 5 to 10 inches, with localized amounts up to 12 inches if heavy snow bands develop. A light glaze of ice is also anticipated, making conditions more hazardous.

Snowfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour are possible during the morning, potentially overwhelming road crews. A brief midday break will bring lighter precipitation before the second wave of snow arrives this afternoon and evening.

Travel Conditions Deteriorating

The NWS warns that untreated and secondary roads may become impassable, and even major routes could face significant disruptions during periods of heavy snowfall. Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel and exercise caution if driving is unavoidable.

“Snow-covered roads combined with sleet and freezing rain will create extremely dangerous travel conditions,” an NWS spokesperson said.

Local Impact and Preparations

In anticipation of the storm, road crews across Southern Maryland are working to treat highways and major roads, but conditions are expected to worsen rapidly as the snow continues. Schools and local government offices are closed in many areas, and utility companies are preparing for potential power outages caused by ice accumulation on power lines.

Safety Tips for Residents

The NWS advises residents to stay indoors and prepare for potential emergencies by ensuring they have an adequate supply of food, water, and other essentials. Those who must travel are encouraged to carry an emergency kit, including a flashlight, extra blankets, and non-perishable food items.
