CALIFORNIA, Md. — The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the region Friday evening, warning that a mix of freezing rain, drizzle and fog could create slick travel conditions as temperatures drop into the 20s.

The advisory, issued Friday afternoon, is in effect from 7 p.m. Dec. 5 to 1 a.m. Saturday for Washington, D.C., much of central, northern and southern Maryland, and central and northern Virginia.

Forecasters expect a light glaze of ice to form on untreated surfaces as moisture freezes, making sidewalks, roads and bridges very slippery. In addition to freezing rain and drizzle, any snow that has partially melted during the day is expected to refreeze overnight as temperatures fall.

The weather service urged drivers and pedestrians to use caution, allow extra time to reach their destinations and be alert for icy patches that may be difficult to see in the dark and fog.
