Mechanicsville, MD– On Feb.19, Maryland State Police (MSP) Trooper William Scarlett responded to DJS One Stop Convenience Store located on Three Notch Road in Mechanicsville for the report of theft.ย
Trooper Pilkerton of the MSP observed the suspect exiting the driver’s side of the vehicle. Pilkerton made contact with the suspect, who was identified as Amy M. Copsey, 33 of Mechanicsville. Pilkerton observed scratch off tickets, two Reese’s Cup packs and a Pure Leaf Sweet Tea in plain view on the front seat of the vehicle.ย
According to charging documents, “a further investigation revealed these were the items stolen from DJS One Stop,”ย
Scarlett made contact with the attendant at DJS One Stop, who advised, “she was assisting other customers in the store when she observed Copsey standing by the scratch-off tickets. The attendant went to get beer out of the cooler when the attendant returned she saw Copsey ripping scratch off tickets from the roll,” according to charging documents.ย
Scarlett reviewed video surveillance from DJS One Stop, at approximately 8:13 a.m., Copsey entered the store and walked to the cooler containing bottled drinks. Takes two Reese cup candy bars and then walks to the counter. According to charging documents, “Copsey turns the display around on multiple occasions so that she can reach the back of the display to pull tickets off the roll and tear them off.”ย
Copsey was transported back to DJS One Stop and “the attendant positively identified Copsey as the subject who stole from the store,” ย according to charging documents.ย
Copsey was arrested and transported to St.Mary’s County Detention Center. Copsey was charged with theft less than $1,000 in value.ย
Copsey at this time does not have a scheduled court date. Copsey faces a maximum jail sentence of one year and six months and/or a maximum fine of $500.
