La Plata, MD – The Women of Action of Charles County invite all women and allies to join them at a picket line and rally in downtown La Plata on March 8 from 11 a.m. โ 6 p.m.
Protesters will gather for a peaceful demonstration outside of the Charles County Courthouse at 11 a.m.ย At 4 p.m., they will march to La Plata Town Hall, where a rally will begin at 4:30. A program, including speakers, is being planned.
March 8 is International Womenโs Day and the day of the International Womenโs Strike, which has been dubbed โA Day Without a Woman.โย On International Women’s Day, March 8th, women and their allies will act together for equity, justice and the human rights of women through a one-day demonstration of economic solidarity. The women of Southern Maryland will gather to show support for women’s rights on the local level.
โNot all women are in a position to take a full day off work, but hopefully by having this march and rally during the lunchtime and early evening hours, women and allies who want to make their voices heard can join us,โ said Maggie Mudd, a local businesswoman and an organizer of the event.
International Womenโs Day is an opportunity to recognize the enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socio-economic system–while receiving lower wages and experiencing greater inequities, vulnerability to discrimination, sexual harassment, and job insecurity.ย Anyone, anywhere, can join by making March 8th โA Day Without a Woman,โ in one or all of the following ways:
1. Women take the day off, from paid and unpaid labor
2. Avoid shopping for one day (with exceptions for small, women- and minority-owned businesses).
3. Wear RED in solidarity with A Day Without A Woman
We would like to thank the La Plata police department, which has been instrumental in planning this event.
The Women of Action of Charles County (WOACC) is a diverse group of county residents that came together following the Womenโs March on Washington to advocate for progressive change at the local, state, and national level.
