GREAT MILLS, Md. — A special tradition continued Sunday, February 16, 2025, at Great Mills High School as 24 young athletes from the St. Mary’s Recreation & Parks Youth Basketball Program were honored with the 2025 Will Smith Leadership Award. The award, given in memory of William Smith Jr., recognizes players who exemplify leadership, sportsmanship, and passion for the game.

Smith, a beloved former participant in the program, tragically lost his life on Sept. 21, 2008. A standout player who attended Ridge Elementary, Spring Ridge Middle, and Great Mills High, he was known not only for his skills on the court but for his commitment to teamwork and respect for others. His legacy lives on through the award, which celebrates young athletes who embody his spirit.

Family members of Smith, including his parents and brother, were present at the ceremony, lending a personal touch to the heartfelt event. Players, coaches, and community members gathered to applaud the 2025 honorees, who stood as examples of dedication and integrity in youth sports.

“This award isn’t just about talent,” said a St. Mary’s R&P official. “It’s about character, leadership, and making a positive impact—things Will exemplified every day.”
