The Young Professionals Initiative of St. Mary’s County committed an extreme act of kindness Monday, Dec. 20, when it hosted a small surprise party for three kids in need this holiday season. The group “adopted” a family through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maryland and collectively supplied great gifts for the children ages 8, 7 and 2.
The group gathered at the Lexington Park Library Monday evening, readied the food and gifts, put on the cheerful Christmas tunes and prepped their very own St. Nick. Anticipation ran high as they awaited the arrival of the children which were sure to be delighted by the bikes, toys, clothing and private holiday party that awaited them.
Amanda Ellington, YPI-SMC’s Program Chairperson and Supervisor of Lexington Park’s Children’s Library, explained,”Together we are making a difference. It might only be a small difference, but the impacts are far reaching.”
Acting President Lauren Klatt said the group of roughly 60 members decided to reach out during the holidays and bring cheer to a family in need. She explained how YPI members purchased gifts from the kids’ wish lists, chipped in for the bicycles and gave their time putting them together and arranging the surprise shindig.
Many made contributions during the group’s “Ridiculously Gaudy Holiday Party” earlier in Dec. and have become big brothers or big sisters after learning more about theย non-profitย during YPI’s Volunteer Awareness Fair in Sept.ย
“This organization is for responsible professionals who care about where they live.ย We advocate positive change towards building a better community,” Ellington said.
