WALDORF, Md. – A 44-year-old Waldorf man was killed Friday afternoon, May 30, 2025, after being struck by an SUV while attempting to cross northbound (U.S. Route 301) Crain Highway just north of Smallwood Drive.
Troopers from the La Plata Barrack and deputies from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene around 1:58 p.m. Emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, but the pedestrian, identified as Edward Coates, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation by the Maryland State Police CRASH Team determined that Coates was crossing the highway outside of a marked or implied crosswalk when he entered the path of a northbound Chevrolet Traverse. The vehicle was operated by Christian Watson, 21, of White Plains.
Authorities have not determined why Coates entered the travel lane. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact Sgt. J. Zimmerman of the MSP CRASH Team at 301-392-1231 or via email at justin.zimmerman@maryland.gov. The investigation remains ongoing.
