PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — There’s no question, we’re in the thick of winter here in Southern Maryland. The recent storm brought snow, ice and hazardous road conditions that have many of us still stuck inside unless we have to be.
Winter activities are fun, but so is staying in. And as winter drags on, it’s important to stay busy, connect with people and find things you like to do so you don’t go stir-crazy.
Easier said than done, we know. But we put together a list of a few activities that have helped us stay occupied during this cold weather and hope everyone finds a great way to learn something new or have some fun.
Here’s The BayNet’s list.
Practice Or Learn A Musical Instrument
If we’re being honest, many of us have a musical instrument, or two, that we always “meant to” learn sitting somewhere and collecting dust. Now is the perfect time to try again. Learning a new instrument takes focus and dedication, so you work on skills beyond just the guitar or piano. It can become a great hobby.
If you don’t already have something you want to learn, check out online resale sites, thrift stores and consignment shops for used instruments.

Get Out Your Old Legos
Legos are a ton of fun and are an activity you can do solo or with others. Again, you are practicing focus and critical thinking skills, so they’re a great way to pass the time. There’s also plenty to make with old Legos — you can get creative and build your own designs, or you can check out the Lego website for past designs that aren’t made anymore.
Searching something simple like “hearts” returns lots of options. So, if you can find the right pieces and improvise, you can make a cool vintage Lego design.

Play Board Games
This is a tried-and-true indoor activity and a fun way to bring family and friends together. You never know what’s hiding in your board game collection, and there might be something that sparks nostalgia or something you haven’t tried before.
You can also use this time to explore new board games. Again, thrift stores are a great place to look.

Read A Book
Another winter weather classic, reading is usually thought of as a solitary activity, but it doesn’t have to be. You can pick a book to read out loud with family and talk about the story and what it means. We love picking books that have movie adaptations so you can compare and contrast when you’re done.
Also — reading actually is great to do alone. Carve out your own space or have dedicated book time in your house for everyone to get absorbed in what they’re reading. And enjoy the quiet.

Build A Fort
Forts are great because they’re fun to build and fun to hang out in. You can build a fort in the morning and take it down in the afternoon. You can build a fort and have a sleepover in it. You can curl up inside with a good book or hang out there to watch a movie. Leave your fort up the entire winter. Anyway, have fun.
