PRINCE FREDERICK, Md.Earth Day was established in 1970 as part of a national movement to show support for environmental protection. Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22, and encourages people to get involved at the local level.

Over the years, Earth Day has taken many forms; during certain periods, it has served as a day of mass mobilization for political movements that support environmental protection legislation. It also serves as an opportunity for groups to educate people in their communities about local, national and global issues.

Earth Day’s theme for 2026 is “Our Power, Our Planet,” which focuses on mobilizing communities to defend the environment and supporting climate policies. This theme is unique because it focuses on people taking action, rather than relying on big groups or governments.

Southern Maryland has a close relationship with the environment, and an environmentally conscious population. People all over the region are aligned on environmental goals and recognize the importance of protecting the Chesapeake Bay and its waterways.

With all that in mind, there are dozens of ways to celebrate and honor Earth Day this year. If you’re looking for community-focused events, check out some of these to learn about the local environment and meet like-minded neighbors.
