“A Celebration of Charity” award recipients announced STEVENSVILLE, MD – Chesapeake Charities announced the award recipients to be honored during their November 17th luncheon, “A Celebration of Charity” at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club in Stevensville. The event will honor Governor Larry Hogan for the courage and leadership he displayed during his first year in office after he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. The Governor’s doctor, Aaron Rapoport, also will be recognized for his dedication to developing new treatments that are yielding tremendous results in the fight against cancer. Marianne Harms was selected from a distinguished group of candidates to receive the Philanthropist of the Year award for her generosity to numerous charities and lifelong commitment to service. A retired Calvert County businesswoman and developer, Mrs. Harms recently established a $1,000,000 endowed scholarship fund for students attending the College of Southern Maryland. Other significant contributions include the Marianne Harms Women’s Care Suite for breast cancer patients at Calvert Memorial Hospital, and the Harms Gallery at the Calvert Marine Museum. Ms. Harms was nominated for the award by Susan Shaw, who serves on the board of the Calvert Community Foundation, a strategic partner of Chesapeake Charities. Other award recipients include the Partnering for Youth After School Program which has provided life-changing experiences for youth in Queen Anne’s County for over 20 years. Partnering for Youth provides academic, enrichment and recreational activities during critical after school hours. The Volunteer of the Year award will be given to Amelia Foxwell for her work with members of the deaf community, wounded veterans, disaster relief efforts, cancer research and, most recently, children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. “We are privileged to honor these special people and to recognize their commitment to improving the quality of life in the Chesapeake Bay region,” commented Linda Kohler, Executive Director. “We are also grateful to the University of Maryland/Shore Regional Health, Bob Pascal, the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club, the College of Southern Maryland, WHBG Certified Public Accountants, Ride Entertainment, Calvert Health Systems, Bay Area Realtors, Eastern Shore Dental Care, Jiffy Lube, Tri Gas and Oil, and Customer Relationship Metrics for making this event possible with their generous support.” Chesapeake Charities is a community foundation that supports a wide range of charitable causes including education, health and human services, animal welfare, and the environment.
