PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — For Barbara J. Warner, retirement didn’t close a chapter — it created the space for one that had been waiting quietly for years.

A longtime Calvert County resident and recently retired grant writer for the Calvert County Department of Public Safety, Warner has announced the release of her debut faith-based book, “Real Life Experiences and Interesting Situations,” a collection of 40 short, devotional-style reflections shaped by her personal journey through faith, service and resilience.

In an interview with The BayNet, Warner reflected on the journey behind her debut book.
The book, published by Trilogy Christian Publishing, is now available for pre-order and will be officially released Feb. 10 through major retailers and online platforms.

Though this is her first published work, Warner’s relationship with writing stretches back decades. About 15 years ago, she began a personal blog, sharing reflections on life’s challenges and the role faith played in helping her navigate seasons of perseverance, uncertainty and growth. Over time, those reflections grew into a quiet archive of stories — ones that were eventually set aside as career and family responsibilities took precedence.

Still, the idea of publishing never fully disappeared.

Two years ago, while recovering from surgery, Warner revisited those earlier writings and began editing and updating them. When she returned to work, the project was again put on hold. Then, in June 2025, after almost 33 years of public service, Warner officially retired from Calvert County government.

Just two weeks later, her life took an unexpected turn.

Warner became seriously ill and was hospitalized overnight. The following morning, after receiving IV medication, she suffered a severe reaction that caused her heart to stop. She survived.

In the aftermath, writing became part of her recovery — and a moment of clarity.
“I realized I had all these stories just sitting there, not helping anyone,” Warner said. “I prayed and asked God to help me finally do what had been in my heart for so long.”

She began researching Christian publishing companies and ultimately connected with Trilogy Publishing. Before submitting the manuscript, Warner added one final story, bringing the total to 40 — a number she chose intentionally for its biblical significance.

Just one week after the manuscript was submitted for review, she received the call.
“I was shocked and thrilled,” she said. “I truly didn’t think it was worthy of being published.”

Why This Matters Locally

Warner’s story mirrors the experience of many in Southern Maryland — years devoted to public service, followed by a season of reflection, reinvention and renewed purpose. Her book speaks to readers navigating retirement, recovery, faith and the realization that it’s never too late to act on a calling long held but rarely spoken aloud.

“These stories came from lived experiences — moments of uncertainty, growth, faith and grace,” Warner said. “My hope is that readers find encouragement to trust God through every season of life.”

As Warner prepares for the book’s release, her journey offers a quiet reminder that some of the most meaningful beginnings arrive after life slows down — and that purpose, much like faith, often finds its voice when the timing is finally right.
