PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — ALDI in Prince Frederick at Armory Square is open for customers, marking a major milestone in the Armory Square development project. The store is located at 429 Solomons Island Road and is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week. The store is the first ALDI in Calvert County.

Commissioners Mark Cox, Earl Hance, Catherine Grasso and Todd Ireland, along with the Calvert County Department of Economic Development, celebrated the opening of ALDI with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025.

After the ribbon-cutting, the county posted on its Facebook page: “ALDI brings a fresh shopping experience to Prince Frederick, offering everyday low prices, quality groceries, and a wide selection of fresh produce, pantry staples and household essentials. With a focus on convenience and value, ALDI is a welcome addition for local families.”

The county commissioners did some shopping alongside residents who were waiting in line to try out the new store. ALDI stocks fresh produce, snacks, frozen foods and more, and is known for its “ALDI Finds” section, where shoppers can score anything from a frying pan to an electric ride-on car for kids.

ALDI is a German-based company that first opened in the U.S. in 1976. Its current headquarters are in Batavia, Illinois, and the chain now boasts 2,400 locations across 38 states.

The chain’s popularity is largely due to the no-frills shopping experience and lower costs. As grocery prices have risen due to operating costs, supply chain issues, inflation and tariffs, ALDI’s prices have increased more slowly than other stores. ALDI uses an efficient business model and stocks more than 90% private-label items, allowing it to have more control over the products and the supply chain. For example, in recent weeks, some ALDI stores in Maryland carried eggs for as little as 99 cents per dozen — a contrast from the national average cost of $3.59 per dozen in August.

ALDI of Prince Frederick will bring another welcome grocery shopping option to Calvert residents. Friendly reminder: Don’t forget your quarters for shopping carts or your reusable shopping bags!
