LEONARDTOWN, Md. – Lifelong St. Mary’s County resident and former Director of Recreation & Parks, Arthur Shepherd (Shep), has officially declared his candidacy for County Commissioner, District 2 which includes the geographic area of Leonardtown and Hollywood.

With over 40 years of public service in St. Mary’s County, Shepherd is widely recognized for having led transformational projects, programs, and events for citizens of all ages and abilities. In 2022, he played an instrumental role in the R&P Department earning national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies. This recognition placed the R&P Department and County among the nation’s best.Arthur was also a passionate advocate for inclusivity, having ensured that all County parks and facility improvements included universal access for users of all abilities.

Shepherd, a Republican, stated that “a major goal of mine is to increase partnerships that will benefit small businesses; and to promote the work of non-profit entities in shaping The County’s future.  I will also value the tax payer’s dollars which will provide incentive for everyone to thrive. Finally, managing growth while honoring our heritage will be at the top of my priorities list.”

More details on his mission, vision, and strategy will be released on June 30, 2025. The Commissioner Primary Election is June 30, 2026.

  1. Arthur IS St. Mary’s County. He knows this place better than most, born, raised, schooled, married and preached here. I had been hoping he would take this logical next step, grateful he’s going for it!

  2. I doubt anyone really believes the St. Mary’s County P&R is among the nation’s best. I can think of several P&Rs in the state that are far superior at every level.
