LEONARDTOWN, Md. — St. Mary’s County Public Schools honored a group of educators Wednesday, February 26, 2025, for achieving National Board Certification, a distinction that highlights excellence in teaching.

During the Board of Education meeting, school officials recognized 12 teachers who earned certification for the first time and two who successfully renewed. The recognition reflects a growing commitment to advanced teaching standards, with the district now boasting 58 National Board Certified Teachers—a 20.6% increase from the previous year.

Sarah Loric, supervisor of strategic initiatives, spoke about the demanding certification process, which includes classroom evaluations, student work samples, and self-reflection assessments. “This achievement speaks to the dedication of our teachers and their commitment to continuous improvement,” Loric said.

The certification process is part of a broader effort to elevate teaching quality and student success. Maryland’s Blueprint for the Future initiative provides incentives for certified teachers, including financial stipends and career growth opportunities.

To encourage more educators to pursue certification, SMCPS has introduced additional resources, including training sessions and a professional development course for the 2024-2025 cycle. More than 140 teachers are expected to participate in the program.

Board members praised the newly certified educators for their hard work and dedication. “These teachers set a high standard for our schools and make a meaningful impact in their classrooms,” one board member noted.

With continued investment in professional development, school officials say the district remains committed to excellence in education and supporting teachers in their pursuit of advanced credentials.
