LUSBY, Md. – Stefan Fernandez was born in Leonardtown and raised in Lusby, Maryland. Always active, but especially in high school, he has been a part of Patuxent High School’s NJROTC, National Honors Society, Four Year Varsity Soccer, and Gifted and Talented Education (GATE).
Fernandez was honored to be selected by Patuxent High School and the state of Maryland among approximately 110 students similarly based on academic rigor, AP scores, and SAT scores for the US Presidential Scholars Program. As a first-generation Peruvian-American, Fernandez’ parents are extremely proud that he had been selected and that he was inspired to apply.

What was his biggest inspiration to go after a much-sought aspiration?
“My father has been the biggest mentor, leader, icon, guide, beacon, and support my entire life. He taught and coached me how to play soccer from the age of three, constantly pushed me to do my best, and ensured no measure of my talent and potential was wasted. Looking back, there is no one as influential as him in my life and I tribute all of my accomplishments to him,” Fernandez told The BayNet.
It has always been Fernandez’ dream to play soccer at the professional level. But, more realistically, it has also been a goal of his to graduate college with a degree in Computer Science or Cybersecurity. In this matter, he recently committed to Virginia Tech for a bachelor’s degree in BIT-Cyber a business and computer science degree!
Ambition and motivation are key factors in future leaders.
“My advice to other young people following my footsteps would be to chase their dreams and don’t get discouraged. Make sure you follow dreams and goals that are truly yours. There are few things in this life that are certain, but only you can decide what you do,” said Fernandez.

He went on to say, “If there is anything more valuable than money, it is to listen to the advice of those around you who care about you and truly think about it while you make decisions and grow up to become successful students, graduates, and people in life.”
The maturity of this advice is astounding.
“I’ve had a few experiences that supported my high school career such as being the NJROTC Commanding Officer for the year 2024 and leading the unit to its 25th straight Distinguished Unit with Honors, the highest award possible by any single unit each year for the top 5% of units per Area,” said Fernandez.
“Also, I attended Maryland Boys State where I learned different leadership styles, participated in various styles of government, and learned what it meant to be a proud United States citizen. These experiences made me more confident and successful as a student and as a person.”
