Prince Frederick, MD –ย A proposal from the Department of Parks and Recreation that was approved unanimously this summer by the Calvert County Commissioners will be taking effect Saturday, Sept. 1. In late June, Parks and Recreation Director Shannon Q. Nazzal forwarded a recommendation to the board that a department-wide discount be offered military personnel. โSome areas of the department have offered discounts or reduced rates to military personnel including daily pool admissions and greens fees at Chesapeake Hills Golf Course,โ Nazzal stated. โA department-wide discount has never been offered. Calvert County is in close proximity to multiple military areas with a veteran population of over 10 percent of residents as of 2016. It is the desire of Parks and Recreation to provide a standard 10 percent discount with a minimum discount of $1 and maximum discount of $50 on regular priced goods and services provided directly by the department to veterans as well as retired and active duty military personnel year around.โ
According to Nazzalโs memo, the discount will not include goods and services offered by โthird parties such as Calvert Nature Society, private service providers, otherwise discounted or promotional prices, youth programs such as summer camps, sports or swim lessons, and alcohol or tobacco products which are sold at Chesapeake Hills Golf Course.โ
To receive the discount, those eligible would need to show a veteranโs identification card, military identification card or another form of military identification.
According to Nazzal, while the discount might yield a small reduction in current revenues, โoverall revenues may increase due to more usage because of the discount offered.โ
The discount would apply to all of Calvert Countyโs government owned and operated aquatics facilities, Breezy Point Parkโs beach, Kings Landing Park rentals, Flag Ponds entrance fees, community center meeting rooms, as well as Chesapeake Hills.
During the commissionersโ brief discussion of the proposal, Commissionersโ Vice President Tom Hejl [R โ At large] stated that he hoped the county government would give some consideration to including law enforcement veterans in the discount plan.
