SOUTHERN MARYLAND — Two local students will take the national stage this May as they compete in the landmark 100th Scripps National Spelling Bee, set for May 27-29 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor.

Aruuke Rayeva, a seventh grader at Archbishop Neale School, will represent Charles County after clinching her win by correctly spelling “allergenic” in the Charles County Public Schools final round.

Abigail Adegbite, an 11-year-old student at Heather Hills Elementary School in Prince George’s County, earned her spot by spelling “fluoride” correctly during the Prince George’s County Public Schools final competition.

This year’s bee marks a major milestone: 100 years since the first Scripps National Spelling Bee in 1925, which began with just nine participants. Now one of the most iconic academic competitions in the country, it draws millions of students each year through local, regional and national contests.

Rayeva and Adegbite will join top spellers from across the country in celebrating a century of spelling excellence, history and fierce competition.
