CHARLES COUNTY, Md. – “I strongly believe this should be a national holiday.”
That’s what Amanda Stewart, member of the Board of Commissioners in Charles County, said at a September 12th, 2023 meeting when proposing government offices be closed on Monday, February 12th, the day after the Super Bowl.
“Everything our staff has gone through this year, they deserve something special,” said Stewart.
Commissioner Stewart’s motion was seconded by Commissioner Gilbert Bowling III and passed, with Commissioner Bowling, Commissioner Ralph Patterson II, and Reuben Collins II present. Commissioner Thomasina Coates was not present for the vote.
One La Plata resident reached out to The BayNet upset that the county is adding another holiday to the calendar.
“County employees have a generous leave package already, why should citizens be funding all of these extra days off,” questioned the resident, who wishes to remain anonymous.
Additional holidays off were also approved at that meeting including November 22nd, December 22nd and 26th, and January 2nd.
Stewart was pleased by the announcement and asked for feedback to see if this is something that employees appreciated and would want to do long-term.
Deborah E. Hall, Deputy County Administrator, thanked the commissioners for their generosity.
“I just want to say thank you on behalf of all the staff for your consideration for their hard work. I already know staff will be so happy.”
So, as stated on the county website, on Monday, February 12th, all Charles County Government offices and the Charles County Animal Care Center in Hughesville are closed. The Nanjemoy Community Center and all senior centers will be closed. The Lackey High School indoor pool will be open from 5:30 p.m.- 9 p.m. The Donald M. Wade Aquatic Center will be open 7 p.m.- 9 p.m. North Point High School indoor pool from 6 p.m.- 9 p.m., and the Waldorf Senior and Recreational Center from 2:30 p.m. -9 p.m. for recreation activities only.

What a waste
what a joke
Free money!
Oh wait, they will get paid with our tax dollars.
They should pay out of their own pockets, in order to sleep off their drunk & high hangovers, like REAL working people do.
We hope ol’ Rueben don’t get another DUI.
This is seriously waste, fraud and abuse. County govt already gets off more than the federally declared holidays as it is. SuperBowl Monday? What if you aren’t a football fan? Then what about Stanley Cup Monday? Or World Series Monday? Will those be added later, because you know, you can’t discriminate…..
It’s been a holiday for years, Lincoln’s birthday, just happens to coincide with a football game. The 19th is a holiday also, should we call it Daytona 500 Monday?
Looks like schools are going to be opened, the teachers, the ones who need a free day, will be teaching???
This is absolutely insane! Those county employees already get paid holidays and will be off the following Monday for Presidents…
A national holiday…hmph. Yea, I don’t think so. It’s JUST A GAME. Not like players are defending the country, fighting fires, saving lives, keeping the peace…they are playing a g-a-m-e.
So ALL the HARD WORKING residents of the county pay for this irresponsible act of authority. The day after super bowl a holiday.YFKM.I know where my VOTE is NOT going the next election
Unbelievable .
Vote them out of office. Shameful. What a joke and slap in the face of hard working Americans.
This has always been a holiday, Lincoln’s birthday, it coincides with the super bowl
Shows your ignorance. Washington’s birthday and Lincoln’s birthday were merged into President’s Day, back in 1971, under the Uniform Monday Holiday Law, which is a Federal and State holiday. Where it was called “Washington and Lincoln’s Birthday,” prior to being changed to President’s Day. It’s what grifters do in “progressive” governments. Make up ignorant proclamations and take from the taxpayer to give to government employees.
If you want that day off, use your own personal leave.
“It should be a national holiday?” Are you kidding me? It’s a game. Get over yourselves. Use your PTO or whatever. Don’t cause further delays for your constituents just because you want another day off.
So, this is really under my skin! SuperBowl Monday…..a National Holiday says Amanda Stewart!!? Charles County Government has decided to close on SuperBowl Monday.
The truth of the matter is SEPTEMBER 11th should definitely trump SuperBowl Monday as a memorial holiday. I’m sure most of us still, on this day, suffer through the gruesome memories and experience grief on 9/11. Those images and the fear doesn’t just go away.
Instead….let’s just stay home the day after SuperBowl because you’re tired or hungover. WTH is this world coming to?
