LA PLATA, Md. — The Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) School Renaming Committee has selected three finalists for the new name of General Smallwood Middle School. The recommended names—Potomac Ridge Middle School, West Charles Middle School, and West Side Middle School—were presented to the Board of Education during a work session on Feb. 24 and will now move forward for community feedback.

The committee is seeking public input on the finalists and will hold a virtual meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, via Zoom. The feedback gathered will be shared with the Board of Education at its March 11 meeting, with a final decision expected this spring.

Community members can join the virtual meeting using the following link: Join the Zoom Meeting

Feedback will only be accepted on the three recommended names, and the committee is not considering additional name suggestions.

The renaming committee, composed of students, parents, staff, and community members, met five times between December and February to review 41 name submissions.

To be eligible, name submissions had to meet one of the following criteria:

  • A geographic feature in Charles County
  • A name unrelated to a person or location that aligns with Board policies
  • The name of a deceased individual who made significant contributions to the community, county, state, or nation
